What You Should Know About Propane
Committed to the safety and comfort of our customers in Northwest and Central Ohio and West-Central Indiana
At Mercer Landmark Energy, we’re proud to deliver an energy product to families that is easy to use, clean for the planet and overwhelmingly safe. Consider these facts about propane:
- Efficient — Today’s propane heating systems have fuel efficiency ratings as high as 98.5%. That’s good for the planet and your wallet!
- Nontoxic — Even in the rare event of a leak, propane won’t harm water, soil, plants or animal life.
- Environmentally responsible — Propane is a low-carbon fuel. It contains zero methane (a potent greenhouse gas) and emits virtually no particulate matter (a carcinogen).
- Versatile — You can use propane to heat your home and water, cook food, dry clothes, provide backup electricity, light up your fireplace, warm your pool and countless other functions.
All this usefulness and efficiency is unconnected to any gas utility — utilities that are often unreliable. Propane is an energy source you control with an on-site tank and a trustworthy propane delivery partner like Mercer Landmark.
Propane tank safety
Propane has a generally outstanding safety record, bolstered by oversight at federal, state and local levels, plus high safety standards within the industry and from individual providers.
Propane producers add an odorant to this fuel to give it a distinctive scent, similar to that of rotten eggs, spoiled meat or skunk spray. We also recommend that you install UL-approved gas detectors near your propane appliances (in addition to carbon monoxide detectors, which don’t detect gas leaks).
If you suspect a propane leak, please follow these instructions:
- Get out of the area immediately.
- Put out any flames, including candles and cigarettes. Don’t use light switches, thermostats, phones or other electronic devices, which can produce a spark.
- If it is safe to do so, close the gas shutoff valve on your propane tank or cylinder.
- Call 911 and Mercer Landmark Energy once you’re a safe distance away from the leak area.
- Allow emergency services and our propane service technicians enough time to check for escaped gas and make the necessary repairs.
- Even if you don’t smell gas anymore, do not return to the leak area or attempt to reopen your tank’s propane supply valve. A trained propane service technician needs to repair the leak, inspect all gas appliances and relight pilots.
- Only return to your home once you receive permission from emergency personnel or your propane service technician.
